You should be linking from an Engage interaction to another slide in the same presentation so I don't understand how the Engage is staying open if you are going to the other slide. I can't think of a way of getting Quizmaker to show the correct avatar though other than option 2. I thought of adding passwords to access the quiz and branching accordingly but that is tantamount to asking what avatar they are anyway. I'll let you know if I can think of anything.
